Vata Constipation & Remedies

Dry earth.jpg

In Vata constipation, the stools are dry and hard.

A bowel movement may consist of a group of small hard stools, likened to rabbit pellets, dry pieces, or lack of a bowel movement altogether.

In extreme Vata constipation, you may only go to the bathroom once a week. If that is the case, it's time to call your Ayurvedic Practitioner!

Vata type constipation is caused by dryness, a lack of hydration, insufficient oils in your diet, or lack of fiber.

Vata constipation can also be caused by stress and anxiety.

Vata type constipation is remedied by gentle, nourishing laxatives like milk with ghee or marshmallow tea.

Time to relax and do quiet calming meditation.

Nourishing, sweet, oily foods like sweet potatoes with ghee.

Warm oatmeal with milk and ghee.

Cooked apples and pears all encourage smooth elimination in Vata types.

Triphala

In all cases, the best ayurvedic remedy for constipation is Triphala which is both a tonic and a laxative. Classically, Triphala is taken upon rising and just before bed.

Steep half to one teaspoon in a cup of hot water for five mins or so minutes. If you don't like the taste you can buy capsules take 2 capsules with warm water.

Ghee

Taking 1 or 2 teaspoonfuls of ghee in a cup of hot milk at bedtime is an effective but gentle means of relieving constipation.

We are reminded that for some people, dairy may be the reason for constipation, but for most, it can soothe the digestive process and enable smooth bowel movements

Stay hydrated!
